How do retail sales move the gold price?

Retail sales lands at 08:30 ET mid-month. The headline carries the two most volatile items in it — the control group does not.

retail salesconsumer demandgrowth expectationsrate pathgold

What it measures

Total receipts at retail and food service stores. Consumer spending is roughly two-thirds of US output, so this is a fast read on whether growth is holding up.

Why it moves gold

Growth feeds directly into how much room the Federal Reserve has. Strong spending supports a case for holding rates higher; weak spending pulls cuts forward. Both routes run through real yields.

The mistake almost everyone makes

Trading the headline.

The headline includes autos and fuel — both volatile, and both driven by factors unrelated to consumer strength. A fuel price spike inflates the number without a single extra unit being sold.

The control group excludes autos, fuel, building materials and food services. It feeds GDP directly, and it often tells a different story.

What to watch inside the release

Control group first, headline second. Revisions to the prior month also matter here and receive less attention than they do in the payrolls report.
