What is a Judas Swing?

The Judas Swing is a false move at the session open that traps early entries before the real direction. How to recognise one and why it should not drive your bias.

What it is

A Judas Swing is an initial move at the session open in the opposite direction to where the session ultimately goes. Price pushes one way, collects the orders resting there, then reverses and trends the other way for the remainder of the session.

Why it happens

Not because someone is targeting you personally. Session opens concentrate order flow: overnight positions get adjusted, stops sit above and below the overnight range, and the first push into that liquidity executes those orders. If the push was liquidity-seeking rather than genuine repositioning, it reverses once absorbed.

How to recognise it in time

You mostly cannot, in the moment — which is the honest answer. What you can do is refuse to set directional bias from the first move of a session, and wait for the reaction to the overnight high or low rather than the break of it. A sweep that closes back inside is meaningfully different from a break that holds.

How we handle it

Judas Swing is display-only in our engine. It appears in the identified-this-cycle list and is explicitly labelled as lower-timeframe context, and it contributes nothing to the confluence score. When it runs counter to higher-timeframe bias we flag the disagreement rather than hiding it, because an unlabelled contradiction reads as the product arguing with itself.
