A CHoCH is the first close beyond a prior swing against the trend — the earliest reversal signal. How it differs from a Break of Structure, and why it needs a displacement filter.
A Change of Character is the first close beyond a prior swing point in the opposite direction to the prevailing trend. In an uptrend making higher highs and higher lows, the first close below the most recent higher low is a CHoCH. It is the earliest structural signal that control may be changing hands.
They are frequently conflated, and conflating them makes both meaningless. A Break of Structure continues the trend; a Change of Character opposes it. You cannot classify either without first establishing trend state from confirmed pivots. If your tool tests only whether price closed beyond the last swing, it is calling everything the same thing.
Taking a CHoCH on its own. Tested mechanically over a 90-day sample of hourly gold, follow-through after a CHoCH came in at 51.6 percent on 403 occurrences — statistically indistinguishable from a coin flip. That is our own measurement on our own data, and it is the reason we do not treat a bare CHoCH as a signal.
Displacement. A break with a large range relative to ATR and a strong body-to-range ratio behaves differently from a break that drifts across the level. We require displacement to be measured on every break, and breaks without it have their confluence weight halved rather than counted at full value.
